Office hours: prepare one question for an instructor's contact time

Here, office hours means a teacher's or instructor's stated time for questions or conversation. It does not mean the opening hours of a building. The practical question is how to use the contact arrangement that is actually offered, whether that involves an appointment, a drop-in period, or another specified format.

Check the current instructions before making a plan. This page cannot promise that an instructor offers office hours, that a particular person may attend, or that an unanswered message creates a right to a meeting.

Bring a question, not a finished explanation

In an invented example, a student is unsure why two answers in a practice exercise use different formats. They mark the two items and write, “What changes between these examples?” They do not need to describe every problem they have encountered in the course to ask that question.

Before the contact time, they check whether to book and where to join. They bring the relevant instructions and their own attempt. They also write down what they have already tried, so the conversation can start with the actual point of confusion rather than a guess about it.

An answer might resolve the question, reveal a different misunderstanding, or require more checking. None of those outcomes should be treated as evidence about the student's ability or ADHD.

A short preparation card

Example or instruction that shows the problem:
What I tried:
What I understood from the reply:
Something still unclear:
Next action, if agreed:

Do not fill the answer fields before the conversation. If the reply is unclear, a specific follow-up such as “Could you show which instruction that refers to?” keeps the uncertainty visible.

When someone else helps prepare

A parent can help a child locate the example without writing an account the child does not recognize. A teen may want to rehearse the first sentence and then attend independently, where the actual arrangement permits. A partner can help an adult student check the meeting time while leaving the academic question to them.

If another person may attend, clarify that with the instructor and student beforehand. Preparation is not permission to join, record, or receive private information. Keep any notes focused on what the participant wants to use afterward.

If the time does not work

Use the course's stated contact route to ask whether another arrangement is available. Explain the scheduling issue briefly without assuming you must disclose a diagnosis. If the matter involves a formal access request or dispute, find the appropriate institutional process; this ordinary question card does not determine those rules.

The purpose is to arrive with a recognizable question and leave with an accurate account of the response, not to follow a compulsory script.
