Belonging: a place on the list is not the same as feeling accepted
The APA Dictionary uses belonging for the feeling of acceptance and approval within a group or society. [1]

The key word for this page is feeling. An attendance record can tell us who came. A membership list can tell us who enrolled. Neither tells the whole story of whether someone experiences the group as a place for them. That question belongs to the person's account, not a conclusion made from their presence alone.
Included in the plan, unsure of the place
Imagine a teenager helping with a neighborhood mural. Their name appears on the volunteer sheet, they have a brush, and the coordinator thanks them for coming. Yet every design decision refers back to meetings they did not attend. When they offer an idea, the conversation moves on without acknowledging it.
Later, the teen says they did not feel part of the group. A parent initially wants to reassure them by pointing to their name on the mural's contributor list. Instead, the parent asks which part of the afternoon they are describing.
In this fictional example, the list and the teen's account are different kinds of information. The conversation does not need to prove that nobody welcomed the teen. It can remain focused on the experience of having a place in the activity while being outside its decision-making conversation.
Ask what the word means here
Someone saying “I belong there” might be describing a relationship, a shared interest, a welcome, or a sense that their contribution matters. Ask for their meaning rather than supplying a checklist. A favorite place need not be important to everyone else in the household.
Likewise, do not infer that a person wants membership in every group available to them. Declining an invitation is not sufficient evidence of a problem. Someone can appreciate an activity without wanting to join its social circle.
Different family perspectives can remain different
A child might want another participant to explain the game before the next round. A teen may care more about whether their ideas are considered. An adult joining an established group may want introductions that do not reduce them to a relationship with another member. These are possible preferences, not age-based predictions.
A partner or grandparent can offer to listen without promising that a particular event will create belonging. A sibling need not be assigned to manufacture another person's friendships. If help is wanted, discuss a specific, ordinary action and leave the person free to decide whether it fits.
Do not score the feeling
An optional private note might finish two sentences: “At that gathering I felt part of things when…” and “The part I want to describe more clearly is….” It is fine to have no example for either. This is a writing invitation, not a scale, screening tool, or inclusion program.
Belonging differs from loneliness and from having a support network. Here it concerns a felt relationship to a group; it does not calculate someone's social health, count their contacts, or supply a universal recipe for welcome.
